The practice was implemented again during World War II by the Germans, who spread it to many countries under Nazi occupation, including Denmark and Poland. However, they returned back to standard time after the war, with Daylight Saving Time relegated to a wartime phenomenon. Seeing sense in the idea, other countries across Europe began to adopt the same practice. This was two years into World War I, and the logic was to reduce the use of artificial lighting, to save fuel and energy for the war effort. The first countries to utilise Daylight Saving Time were Germany and Austria, who both implemented the policy on April 30, 1916. Various other regions in Canada soon followed their example, starting with Winnipeg and Brandon in 1916. Canada was the first to change the clocksĭaylight Saving Time was first actually implemented in a region of Canada, when the residents of Port Arthur, Ontario, decided in 1908 to shift their clocks to make better use of the daylight hours during spring and summer. Although there was interest in all of these ideas, they were never followed through. Later, in 1895, New Zealand scientist George Vernon Hudson proposed changing the clocks by two hours every spring, to give him more daylight hours to collect and examine insects. In 1907 British builder William Willett suggested implementing a clock shift to save energy. Then, after the advent of the pendulum clock and other more accurate timekeeping devices, in 1784 the polymath Benjamin Franklin proposed the idea of moving waking hours to align better with daylight hours. In a satirical letter to The Journal of Paris, he suggested people should wake up earlier in summer to save money on candles and lamp oil. The Romans used the flow of water to measure time, and their scales were adjusted throughout the year according to the position of the earth around the sun. It may surprise you to know that the idea of setting the time forward and back with the fluctuations of the seasons and daylight actually has a very long history. Where does Daylight Saving Time come from? Throughout the rest of the year, the CET time zone is observed in the Netherlands, which is just one hour ahead of UTC. During these months, the Netherlands is two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Like many countries across Europe, the Netherlands has two time zones: Central European Time (CET) and Central European Summer Time (CEST).Īs the name would suggest, CEST is observed between the end of March and the end of October, when daylight savings is in effect. How does DST affect the Netherlands' time zone? In 2023, this means the clocks are going forward on March 26, and will go back on October 29. These changes occur annually on the last weekends in March (when the clocks go forward by one hour) and October (when the clocks go back by one hour and daylight savings comes to an end). This means that twice a year, people across the country dutifully set their clocks forward and back one hour. Love it or hate it, the fact remains that Daylight Savings Time (DST) is also practised in the Netherlands. So we ask, why do we change the clocks twice a year, and will this practice continue forever? Daylight Savings: Does the time change in the Netherlands? It's been this way for so long that almost nobody questions it, but to expats who might have different experiences in their home countries, it can be the source of some confusion. That extra adjustment with the clocks is enough to have a noticeable effect on some people, especially young children and seniors, she said.Every year in March and October, people in the Netherlands and around the world set their clocks forward and back one hour. Xue Ming, a neurology professor at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, said our circadian rhythms are already out-of-sync: We're tuned to operate on a 24.5-hour biological clock, but our lives operate on a 24-hour calendar. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine believes permanent DST "disrupts the natural seasonal adjustment of the human clock due to the effect of late-evening light on the circadian rhythm."īut most health experts agree that settling into daylight saving time or standard time is better than changing the clocks twice a year. Those early sunsets feel natural too, until we start messing with the clocks. But by the time Congress instituted a new four-month standard time, daylight saving time had just 42% approval.ĭaylight saving time opponents argue that our bodies are intrinsically linked to the sun and the seasons. About 79% of Americans favored the switch, a poll showed at the time.

However, this is a fantastic step for many senior citizens as they will be directly investing with the central government. It offers a high-interest rate and is one of the most advantageous investment options, especially when compared to more conventional ways. The scheme is one of the most secure and trustworthy investing options for elderly citizens because it is a government-backed modest savings programme. The cap of Rs.15 lakh limit prevented many senior citizens from making use of the scheme, therefore this increase is a positive decision. The government increased the interest rate on the Senior Citizens' Savings Scheme to 8 percent for the fiscal quarter ending March 31, 2023. #budget2023 increased the maximum investment amount for the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme from Rs. I'm sure there is a fix for that, but as this question did not ask specifically about wget I thought I would offer an alternative for those people who will undoubtedly stumble upon this page looking for a quick fix with no learning curve required. However sometimes there are characters in the address that wget identifies as syntax errors. Wget is an invaluable resource and something I use myself. However, unlike ‘-nd’, ‘-cut-dirs’ does not lose with subdirectories-for instance, with ‘-nH -cut-dirs=1’, a beta/ subdirectory will be placed to xemacs/beta, as one would expect. If you just want to get rid of the directory structure, this option is similar to a combination of ‘-nd’ and ‘-P’. Here are several examples of how ‘-cut-dirs’ option works. This is where ‘-cut-dirs’ comes in handy it makes Wget not “see” number remote directory components. While the ‘-nH’ option can remove the / part, you are still stuck with pub/xemacs. If you retrieve it with ‘-r’, it will be saved locally under /pub/xemacs/. This is useful for getting a fine-grained control over the directory where recursive retrieval will be saved. By default, invoking Wget with ‘-r ’ will create a structure of directories beginning with /. See Directory-Based Limits, for more details.ĭisable generation of host-prefixed directories. Once you've completed the mappings, click the Save button. you can type "con" and a dropdown should show the available options, like control_l, control_r, etc: You can type the first few letters instead of the whole word, e.g. Click inside the Mapping cell corresponding to the key you want to remap, then start typing what you want to remap the button to. In case this doesn't work, you may need to click the Apply Defaults button that's displayed to the right-hand side of the device dropdown, and add the key after that.Īfter you enter the key (or keys) you want to remap, it's time to decide its mapping. Left-click in the Key column, then press the keyboard key or mouse button you want to remap, and it will show up in the key box. Choose a device, and you can start creating a new preset to easily remap your keyboard or mouse buttons. The first time you run Input Remapper, you'll want to select the device (mouse or keyboard) from the device dropdown. You may also use it to assign a macro (a sequence of button presses / actions) to a key. Using Input Remapper you can assign the action associated with a keyboard or mouse button (or multiple buttons) to a different button. How to remap keyboard and mouse buttons on Linux using Input Remapper (ex Key Mapper) ] Input Remapper has been updated with support for mapping joysticks like D-Pads, support for mapping the mouse wheel, key combinations, and loading presets automatically when devices are connected, even after login. For that, see this article from Linux Uprising.įor future releases, the developer plans to add support for mapping D-Pad and Joystick directions as buttons, automatically loading presets when a device is plugged in after login, and mapping a combined button press to a key. The application does not support binding commands or scripts to keyboard or mouse buttons. Also, Input Remapper uses evdev to read keycodes and display them inside the application, so the user doesn't have to do this manually. Other features include support for stopping any mappings and using system defaults for a device (using the Apply Defaults button), and support for automatically loading presets on login for plugged in devices. Besides keyboards and mice, Input Remapper also comes with basic support for gamepads. The application supports per-device presets, and it allows using timed macros with the ability to repeat keys, wait between keys, hold a modifier while using a key, and more. "If you want to customize some particular controls instead of changing the whole layout - reWASD can do that too.Input Remapper (previously Key Mapper) is a new GUI tool to remap your keyboard and mouse buttons on Linux desktops (it supports both X11 and Wayland). So when you press a controller button, joystick mapper reproduces the keyboard key press. reWASD can assign the keyboard and mouse clicks to the preferable controller buttons. However, that’s not a problem if you use reWASD as a joystick to keyboard mapper. "Lots of games simply don’t have controller support. ReWASD is a good solution to the problem of using a controller for Valorant, as the company behind the remapper explain on their site: This app allows you to re-map PC game controls to a controller of your choice. There are a number of different applications online that allow you to do so, including reWASD. You can't just plug and play with a controller in the game, instead, you'll need to use an application that essentially 'tricks' the game in receiving input from your controller, be that PS4, PS5, Xbox 360 or Xbox One/Series S or X. It's worth noting that yes, you can play Valorant with a controller on your PC, but there are certainly some caveats. Selecting the right tool can be a tricky task.
